Seasonal Pest Prevention Calendar for California Properties

This is my suggested rhythm for inland Southern California properties. Where a timing point comes from a published source, the source is named.

When should property managers schedule ant control in California?

UC IPM notes ant baiting works best in late winter and early spring as populations start to grow. Schedule your licensed pest professional before the spring surge.

When should I look for wasp and yellowjacket nests?

CDPR recommends monitoring for wasp nests in early spring. Don't disturb nests; call a professional to remove them.

Winter (Dec–Feb)Ants, rodentsWalk exteriors after rain for ant trails and new entry points; seal gaps larger than 1/4 inch with metal or concrete. UC IPM notes ant baiting works best in late winter and early spring as populations start to grow, so schedule your pest professional before the spring surge (UC IPM, Ants).
Spring (Mar–May)Ants, yellowjackets, termites, spidersCheck for termite swarmers and mud tubes; subterranean termites swarm in spring, summer, or fall (UC IPM, Subterranean and Other Termites). CDPR recommends monitoring for wasp nests in early spring (CDPR, Wasp IPM). Clear clutter and debris from garages, storage, and foundations.
Summer (Jun–Aug)Ants, cockroaches, scorpions, yellowjackets, fleasKeep trash enclosures clean and lids closed; fix irrigation leaks and sprinkler heads, which draw thirsty ants (UC IPM, Ants). Check weatherstripping and door sweeps for scorpions. Remind residents to keep food and drinks covered outdoors.
